I’m constantly told I should switch to softball. They say softball is the girls equivalent to baseball. I tried softball and it’s not the same. When I try to explain this to people they argue with me. Can you tell me the biggest differences between the two sports so I can support my side when I respond to everyone?
-Anonymous 14yrYou are right, although there are similarities, softball and baseball are not the same sport! It’s almost like comparing ping pong and tennis!
First, I give you so much credit for trying softball and being open to change; after all how can you say you don’t like something if you never try it? When I am faced with this conversation, the one thing I always have to remind myself is that many people don’t know about the opportunities in girl’s baseball. When they tell you to switch, try not to take offense to the suggestion but rather treat it as an opportunity to educate them on what your goals are and what opportunities do exist. For example, if your goal is to make the USA Baseball WNT, let them know that. They will probably be surprised that there is a WNT! Most of the time, if you don’t get defensive, they won’t get argumentative and it makes for a much better conversation. You may even turn them into your biggest supporter!
In regards to the differences, I’m sure you already know most of what makes the games different so try to personalize your response. If you are a pitcher, that's an easy one! One of the reasons I personally preferred playing baseball was because, as a catcher, the base running made the game more challenging. The cat and mouse game with the pitcher and baserunner added another level of the mental game that I had fun being a part of. No-one can argue what you enjoy about the game!
When you get someone extra spicy, ask them how many boys do they tell to go play softball? ;)Description text goes here
